Southport will hold an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 25 in the town hall to discuss whether residents will approve matching funds for the Hendricks Head Beach project.
The federal project has an estimated $1,803,785 cost. The project is a pre-hazard mitigation and coastal resilience project intended to protect Hendricks Head Beach. The project's purpose is shoring up the adjacent seawall, and elevating Beach Road and the surrounding parking area.
The federal grant requires a local contribution of $292,000, or a 25% match.
At 6 p.m. July 1, Southport will hold a special town meeting on the request for the local match. The question reads, "To see if the town will vote to raise and appropriate a sum not to exceed $292,000 to provide the town's required 25% local matching share of the Hendricks Head Beach Coastal Resilience Project, and to authorize the select board to apply for, accept and expend any and all federal and state grants awarded for the project. The local matching grant shall be contingent upon receiving additional grant funding."
