Southport Junior Yacht Club
Everyone at SJYC had so much fun during the busy second-to-last week of the summer sailing program! On Tuesday and Wednesday, we successfully hosted the Maine State Opti Regatta, and all sailors had a great time.
In the morning class, there were four new sailors and two new Munchkin Mariners for the week. Lizzie Garey, Ethan Smith, Drew Wetowitz, and Angus Kaler swam through Cozy Harbor to complete their test, while Edith Chapman and Carson Wetowitz completed their 10-second dip in the water. However, Edith also completed the swim despite it not being required! The morning class sailors had a great week of sailing up the Sheepscott, visiting the Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse and the “Roundhouse” at the North tip of Southport Island. The young sailors completed their fun week by sailing in 420s with their instructors for their Friday Fun Day.
All of our Opti sailors were busy sailing in Maine State Optis this week! With over 20 sailors in both the Championship and Green fleet, many exciting races took place. The top Champ fleet finishers were Hadden Brinegar in 4th place, Taylor Smith in 10th place, Angus Preston in 11th place, and Nate Phippen in 12th place.
Our 420 sailors also had a great week, welcoming the recreational Turnabout sailors into 420s for Tuesday and Wednesday and cruising up Pratt’s Shore. It was race day on Monday for the 420 sailors, and they were able to get three fun races in. The day ended with Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder in 1st place with 4 points, Nate Phippen and Liam Donahue in 2nd with 7 points, and Ily Harrington and Morgan Donahue in 3rd with 8 points. On Thursday, the last race day of the August Race Series took place, resulting in Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder in 1st with 3 points, Nate Phippen and Liam Donahue in 2nd with 7 points, and Hadden Brinegar and Audrey Eastwood in 3rd with 11 points. On Friday, the 420 sailors celebrated a sunny day with flipping drills so that everyone could cool off and swim in the Sheepscott together!
On Thursday evening, we had the second Bingo event of the summer, where 65 prizes from local establishments were up for grabs. Many people of all ages attended and had so much fun winning great prizes.
Next week is, unfortunately, the final week of the SJYC sailing program, meaning that summer is coming to an end. We will all still have lots of fun for the final week and look forward to attending the Banquet at the Southport Town Hall on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
