Seahawks, Cougars battle to double OT tie
Dirigo Cougar goalie Keira Reny made 20 saves against the Boothbay Region Seahawks, several in both eight-minute overtimes, preserving a 2-2 tie on a warm Homecoming weekend in Dixfield on Saturday, Oct. 11.
The now 10-1-2 Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead just a minute and 15 seconds into the game when Moriah Smith sent a clear shot past Reny into the goal.
From there it was Dirigo’s turn to score. Zoey Bordeau tied the score at 10:49 of the second quarter off an assist from Madisyn Bradeen. Bradeen made it 2-1 with 39 seconds left in the second quarter off an assist from Emma Witas.
It looked like Boothbay might suffer its second loss of the season through the third and most of the fourth quarter but during an offensive attack in front of Reny by the Seahawks, Olivia Hardwick pushed the ball into the goal with just under five minutes to play.
The 7-on-7 overtimes saw Boothbay taking several shots and Dirigo had a couple of chances – Boothbay goalie Jess Steinmetz made a nice kick save on a Cougar breakaway – and the long game ended with Boothbay recording its second tie of the season – the first being a scoreless tie at Lisbon.
The Cougars, now 5-7-1, are currently in fourth place in Class C North while the Seahawks are in second place in Class C South, with Lisbon still on top of the division.
Boothbay is scheduled to travel to Farmingdale to face the fifth-place Hall-Dale Bulldogs in its final regular season game on Friday, Oct. 17, which is a rescheduled game from Wednesday, Oct. 8.
