Coastal flooding: Tides, storms, and sea level rise
The Boothbay Region Climate Action Team (BRCAT) invites volunteers to participate in a King Tide observation on Friday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m. at the west end of the footbridge. Dottie Yunger from the Department of Natural Resources will present on King Tides and talk about a community science initiative to document coastal flooding.
Volunteers will learn a standardized data collection method for gathering weather and water level data, contributing to the assessment of sea level rise and coastal storm impacts. Data collected--including photos of flooding events, along with a questionnaire about weather conditions and personal observations and reflections--will support emergency preparedness, identify sites of high concern, and inform climate decisions. The data is also shared with the National Weather Service to help refine flood models and improve emergency alert systems.
