Rotary Foundation continues sponsoring films for students
One of Harbor Theater’s dedicated Community Partners is the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club. Again in 2026, the Rotary Foundation donated $2,500 to provide at least 15 screenings of films for approximately 675 young people at the theater. Rotary will sponsor films that are related to school curricula, local authors, filmmakers, history and events. In 2025, a total of 880 students attended films with free admission.
Already this year, a group of 35 Boothbay Region High School students attended a special screening of Golden Globe winner, and Academy Award nominee “Hamnet,” a film about Shakespeare’s inspiration for his play “Hamlet.” It is difficult to predict what other films appropriate and relevant to students will be released in the coming year, but with a current trend to adapt books to screen, it is likely that in 2026, we will see a continuation of the types of films our local school and community youth groups have found of interest in past years.
In addition to attending special screenings of films, local students are becoming involved at the theater in other ways. Two years ago, three BRHS students worked part-time as projectionists. Since last year one senior, Chloe Joneth, has volunteered weekly at the theater as a “greeter” and concessions helper. Another current student, Cole Hyson interns at Boothbay Region TV and Media Center (BRTV) and often helps video the theater’s monthly “Spotlight on Harbor Theater.”
Screening films for young people and involving students in the local nonprofit cinema helps Harbor Theater accomplish its goal to inspire, enrich, educate, and entertain our community.
Thank you, Boothbay Harbor Rotary Foundation for your significant contribution!
