Boothbay Region Refuse Disposal District (BRRDD) Operations Manager Will Johnson said June 18, the district received a $2,626 Ed MacDonald safety grant from Maine Municipal Association to buy hard hats, safety nets, speed bumps and cones.
He also said that in the coming weeks, BRRDD will begin taking its trash to Municipal WasteHub in Hampden, a nonprofit dedicated to helping its 115-member municipalities meet the state’s 50% recycling goal through disposal of municipal solid waste.
The hub only recently became fully operational, but Johnson said the district has had a longstanding contract with it. “We have to go there, even though it's going to cost us more to travel. (However), we'll get the same price as we're paying right now, because they're paying the difference at the landfill.”
The board approved $8,600 for replacing the district’s signs. The board also approved replacing two compact trash cans for $14,300 each, which will be part of BRRDD’s next budget cycle, beginning July 1.
The board floated reorganizing the space and installing a half-wall at Giles Rubbish to create more offices.
