Here she is, Miss Maine Teen at the Boothbay selectboard meeting
The Boothbay Selectboard made a special proclamation Nov. 12 honoring an East Boothbay resident now better known as Miss Maine Teen. On June 28, Alana LaCourse, 15, was crowned Miss Maine Teen. In September, she competed in the Miss America Teen competition in Alabama.
Last Wednesday, LaCourse was recognized for her accomplishment in becoming Miss Maine Teen. Chairman Chuck Cunningham read the proclamation honoring her. "This is in recognition for the pride she brought to the community and inspiration to young people here in Boothbay and beyond," he said.
LaCourse thanked selectmen for the proclamation and told them about her pageant experience and herself. LaCourse said she is passionate about helping the less fortunate and being a good role model for children. She has formed her own nonprofit called GIVE O.N.E., which helps raise funds to help aspiring Maine ski racers get equipment.
LaCourse formerly attended Boothbay Region schools. Now, she attends Gould Academy in Bethel.
In other action, selectmen unanimously approved a new self-sponsored events liquor license for Boothbay Playhouse. In the town manager's report, Dan Bryer told selectmen Boothbay Region kindergarten students brought food for the Community Fridge and learned about the democratic process. The students voted in a school election at the town office. Bryer reported students participated in a referendum on either an extended recess or a movie. "They came in and dropped off their donated food and voted. They stood in line waiting for the clerk to check their name and voted in the booth," he said. Nov. 17, the Boothbay Register confirmed "extended recess" won.
Consultant Shri Verrill updated selectmen about an environmental vulverability study she is conducting. Verrill told selectmen she expects her report to be completed in late March/early April. She told selectmen about three possible future grant opportunties. One is an $80,000 Active Transportation grant. The second is a $75,000 Working Waterfront grant. The third is a $2 million Maine Coastal Community grant.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26 in the conference room.
