Midcoast Senior College announces spring term courses
Midcoast Senior College (MSC) is pleased to announce its Spring Term II 2026 lineup of engaging, non-credit courses for adult learners. Running from April 6 through May 15, the term features a wide range of in-person and online classes in the humanities, sciences, social issues, arts, and contemporary topics. Registration opens March 9.
This term’s offerings reflect MSC’s deep commitment to lifelong learning, inviting participants into intellectually engaging courses led by inspiring scholars and professionals. Subjects range from Shakespeare to detective fiction, from the intelligence of plants to the maladies of the human brain, and from the American Revolution to the Buddhist practice of tranquility.
Highlights include “How Revolutionary was the American Revolution, an exploration of some of the myths and influences of the American Revolution;” “Humor: Not Just a Laughing Matter,” a look at what role humor plays in social engagement and societal norms; “Buddhism in the US,” an exploration of the practice of Buddhism and its emphasis on fostering tranquility.
People interested in science might enjoy “The Intelligence of Plants,” a topic about which botanists are still divided; or “Brain Repair,” a presentation and discussion of what we know and don’t know about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), stroke, and dementia and their potential treatments and therapies.
Literature enthusiasts may choose from seminars on William Shakespeare’s King Lear; British crime writer, essayist and Christian writer, Dorothy Sayers, the creator of Lord Peter Whimsey, in Dorothy Sayers, The Holy Mysteries; or closer to home, Writerly Brunswick: How Words and Place Have Shaped Each Other, a collection of fiction, essays and poetry running from our own area’s pre-European history to the present day.
The second half of a special multi-instructor course, “The Romantic Era: Literature, the Arts, Revolution,” will examine the enduring influence of Romanticism across disciplines.
Courses are held at locations throughout the Midcoast, including the University of Maine Augusta–Brunswick Center, Patten Free Library in Bath, Avita at Brunswick Landing, The Highlands in Topsham, and via Zoom. Most classes meet once a week and range from four to eight weeks in length.
Midcoast Senior College is a membership-supported, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality educational opportunities for adult learners in a welcoming community environment.
