Maine State Aquarium update
Dear Editor:
In 2021, after decades providing visitors and locals with information and inspiration about the Gulf of Maine marine environment, the Maine State Aquarium needed significant repairs and renovations.
With support from Representative Holly Stover, whose advocacy in the legislature secured funding for the work, the Maine State Aquarium re-opened its doors last year, revealing a redesigned interior, new exhibits, and updated displays.
While we recognize that some people feel nostalgic for the Aquarium that they and their families grew to love, the renovated facility reflects a renewed commitment to visitor experience and the health of the animals in our care.
The building, displays, and exhibits are now consistent with museum industry standards for design and interpretation, and with aquarium industry standards for animal welfare.
Custom designed display tanks provide a unique, up-close view of marine life in its natural habitat. Interactive exhibits highlight some of the exciting research DMR conducts to protect and manage vital Gulf of Maine resources.
The new Learning Lab provides an interactive space where visitors learn about sharks in the Gulf of Maine and enjoy presentations from DMR scientists on the groundbreaking research that helps protect and sustain Maine’s valuable marine resources and environment.
We recognize that personal encounters with marine resources provide life-changing experiences for visitors, including today’s youth who may very well go on to become tomorrow’s scientists and marine educators.
Changes to tank sizes, design, and the species we display reflect our commitment to standards established by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). These guidelines ensure that the Aquarium meets ethical and scientific standards for animal well-being, while providing continued opportunities for meaningful and formative animal interactions.
Environmentally sustainable merchandise from our gift shop offers visitors not only a memento of their visit, but also a reminder of the conservation and stewardship mission of the Department of Marine Resources.
Buoyed by the many positive reviews we have received, we will continue to build on the successes of this past year, developing new ideas for content and exhibits that educate and inspire. We look forward to seeing you in 2026!
