Nora West was recently recognized at the Maine Art Gallery’s 2025 Annual Show, earning one of two coveted “Plein Air: Maine Observed Awards.”

This recognition comes with a $100 prize and high praise from juror David Dewey, acclaimed author of "The Watercolor Book" and curator of "Fiore at 100: Maine Observed." In his presentation, Dewey commended Nora’s painting, “Mountain Magic,” for its refreshing directness and ability to “let the magic of the mountain speak for itself.” He placed Nora’s approach firmly in the tradition of American painting, noting her talent for representing Maine’s landscape and visual heritage with clarity and heart. “Mountain Magic” is on public display at the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset. What makes this honor especially meaningful to the High Peaks community is that “Mountain Magic” was started just weeks ago on the Perham Stream Birding Trail during a High Peaks Alliance photo shoot. Nora volunteered her time to take part in this effort promoting sustainable recreation, setting up her easel en plein air (outdoors) along the trail. The location is both a birding hotspot and a highlight of The Artists Trail, a heritage trail for en plein air painters and photographers with 15 locations throughout the Rangeley Lakes Region.

“The High Peaks Alliance has created access to some amazing places. I appreciate all their hard work to preserve and create new trails for all types of travel. Painting outdoors in Maine is my passion. I love having these new opportunities to create art,” West shared.

Those feeling inspired to create, or simply want to enjoy the region’s artistic landscapes, can take note; Rangeley Friends of the Arts (RFA) hosts two en plein air workshops annually, which visit the Perham Stream Birding Trail and many other conserved locations along the Artists Trail. 

“We are proud to support artists in connecting with Maine’s stunning landscapes,” said Diane Bellington, RFA Executive Director. “Workshops like ours help both seasoned and aspiring painters find fresh inspiration in the High Peaks region’s incredible scenery.” 

The RFA also hosts a vibrant schedule of gallery exhibits, live theater performances, music concerts, and storytelling workshops at the RFA Lakeside Theater.
