Lisbon sweeps Boothbay baseball with wins Friday, Saturday
It was a lost weekend for the Boothbay Region baseball team. The Seahawks traveled to Lisbon May 22 and lost to the Greyhounds, 10-0. The next day, Lisbon traveled to Boothbay Harbor and defeated the Seahawks, 13-3. Boothbay is now 1-9 and sits in 10th place in the Class D standings.
Despite the loss and record, Boothbay still has a chance to make the playoffs. There is a log-jam of teams ranked 7-10 in the Heal points. Eight teams make the post-season. With six games remaining, Boothbay Coach Ed Crocker sees several winnable games remaining.
"I have a young team with about four players with previous varsity experience. So it's tough, our freshmen and sophomores are playing other teams' juniors and seniors," Crocker said. "I've seen the improvement, and when you look at our schedule, there are several winnable games. We already beat Hall-Dale. We have two games against Madison which is also in Class D. We should've beaten Spruce Mountain, but walks and wild pitches hurt us in the end."
On May 22, Boothbay hitters only managed two hits. Casey Phelps and Matt Reed both singled. Lisbon pitching walked two and struck out eight in five innings. Boothbay allowed three runs in the bottom of the fifth which triggered the 10-run mercy rule.
Boothbay pitching allowed nine hits, three earned runs, walked two and struck out three.
On Saturday, Lisbon won in six innings. The Greyhounds scored six times in the fifth inning, triggering the mercy rule. Boothbay trailed, 6-2, after three innings. Boothbay scored three runs on two hits. Phelps and Les White singled. Aiden Locke had a run batted in. Lisbon pitching recorded 13 strikeouts and allowed four walks.
Boothbay pitching allowed seven hits, six earned runs, struck out four and walked nine. Lisbon improved to 8-4.
