Learn the essentials of growing your own apples
Join apple enthusiast, Ron Ross, for an engaging talk on what it takes to plan, plant, and ultimately pick apples from your own tree(s) at the next meeting of the Boothbay Region Garden Club! Topics will include selecting appropriate apple varieties, locating and preparing the site, planting and caring for young trees. The meeting is on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at approximately 2:30 p.m. at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church (32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor). The public is invited to join us for refreshments which will be served at 1:30 p.m.
In 2014, Ron and his partner, Fred Kraeuter, began Burnham Cove Heirloom Orchard in a vacant field across from their Boothbay home on River Road. Each year a few more of their 70 apple trees (50 different heritage varieties) are bearing fruit. Ron and Fred also coordinate the Apple Corps, a dedicated volunteer group, which maintains orchards at Oak Point Farm and Singing Meadows Preserve for the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Ron has conducted workshops, tours, and talks on everything that has to do with apples.
