The Maine Art Gallery’s current show, “Song of the Wild,” which closes on July 26, takes the gallery visitor on an indoor path through nature as expressed in a fascinating variety of mediums. At the same time, a select group of artists is setting up their easels in the woods and meadows of Maine to create new paintings for the upcoming plein air exhibit that opens on July 30.

“Song of the Wild” leads you from  Eric Hopkins’ blockbuster aerial views of ocean and islands and Jane Dahmen’s bold birches and pine groves to Barbara Sullivan’s 3D hanging frescoes of a fawn, a rabbit, a beaver, and wildflowers. You’ll be stopped in your tracks by Lesia Socor’s birch bark sculpture of a statuesque maiden surrounded by bark sculptured animals found on her land.

Matt Barter interprets the curves and angles of the land in painting and wood sculpture; Katherine Shagas’ and Kelly Desrosiers’ mixed media works fairly explode with energy.  Sarah Farragher and Joy Vaughan each calm us with seascapes and landscapes, and Emily Sabino celebrates the healing qualities of plants and seeds, along with the gentle smiles of a pair of harbor seals. Liv Kristin Robinson’s exquisite photographs of the beauty in our own backyards can convince one that all’s right in the world.

The next show, “Plein Air: Paint it Maine,” opens July 30. Plein air artists will be creating their work from July 11-July 25 throughout the entire geographic scope of the state, perhaps in nature preserves such as those protected by the Midcoast Conservancy.  This show will run on the first floor of the gallery concurrently with “The Art of Alchemy: Collage/Mixed Media Exploration” on the second floor. The gallery will be open late on July 30 for Wiscasset’s Art Walk. A reception for artists in both shows will be held on Saturday, Aug, 1, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
