Jeffrey McKinney earns Eagle Scout rank, honored at local ceremony
On June 18, Jeffrey McKinney of Newcastle, a member of Boy Scout Troop 213, was recognized for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Scouting. The ceremony took place at the Damariscotta American Legion, where McKinney, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow Scouts, received his Eagle Scout regalia in recognition of years of leadership, service, and commitment.
Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is a significant accomplishment attained by only about 6% of Scouts nationwide, placing Jeffrey among a select group, who reach this distinguished level.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Jeffrey designed and constructed a fire pit at the Boothbay American Legion. The fire pit will serve as a dedicated site for respectful flag retirement ceremonies, creating a meaningful and lasting resource for the community.
Jeffrey expressed sincere appreciation to those who supported the project, including the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Garden Club, E.M. Wood, Reny’s, Home Depot, and Vonda Yonge, as well as the many other individuals who contributed time, materials, and financial support.
Throughout his Scouting career, McKinney demonstrated exceptional dedication, earning 58 merit badges. He has also earned certification in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and has received numerous honors, including the National Outdoor Achievement Award in Aquatics, Camping, and Riding. Additional recognition included the Paul Bunyan Award, Historic Trails Award, and the World Conservation Award.
As part of his Eagle Scout ceremony, McKinney presented his Eagle Scout Mentor Pin to Ed Harmon in recognition of his guidance, encouragement, and support, particularly during the planning and completion of the Eagle project.
Looking ahead, McKinney aspires to serve in the United States Navy, continuing his commitment to service and helping others.
McKinney’s achievement reflects not only years of perseverance and hard work, but also the strength of a supportive community that helped him reach this milestone.
