Iconic performances return to the big screen
Lincoln Theater's 150th anniversary "Modern Classics" film series continues this month with two beloved classics chosen by community vote. Each month, Lincoln Theater invites newsletter subscribers and social media followers to vote for films they'd most like to see return to the big screen. From a list of 10 films centered around a different theme, participants select their first and second choices, with the top two vote-getters earning screenings the following month.
July's theme, "Iconic Performances," celebrated the unforgettable actors whose performances transcended their films to become part of cinema history. Whether through subtle emotion, commanding presence, or unforgettable dialogue, these are the roles that continue to inspire audiences and influence generations of performers. After the votes were counted, two timeless classics rose to the top: Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) and The Godfather (1972).
Featuring Audrey Hepburn in one of the most recognizable performances in film history, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" tells the story of Holly Golightly, an enigmatic New York socialite who forms an unlikely friendship with a young writer living in her apartment building. Beneath its glamour and romance, the film explores themes of identity, belonging, and the search for genuine human connection. Hepburn's charming and nuanced portrayal of Holly remains one of the defining performances of Hollywood's Golden Age. "Breakfast at Tiffany's" will be shown Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, July 22 at 2 p.m.
The second audience selection, "The Godfather," is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. Based on Mario Puzo's bestselling novel, the film chronicles the Corleone crime family as reluctant heir Michael Corleone is drawn into a world of power, loyalty, and betrayal. Marlon Brando's legendary portrayal of Vito Corleone and Al Pacino's unforgettable transformation as Michael have become benchmarks of screen acting, helping cement the film's place as one of the most influential dramas in cinematic history. "The Godfather" will screen Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, July 23 at 1 p.m.
Tickets, at regular film prices, for both films are available in advance at www.LincolnTheater.org. Tickets are also available at the door beginning 30 minutes before showtime.
