Have a seat: 6 good things
Our 2026 installments of six good things in and around Wiscasset have been occasional instead of monthly like 2025's five good things mostly were. We are fitting them in as we can get to them. And you are reading a midsummer morning's catchup.
First is the pair of granite benches being added to the Water Street, Wiscasset sidewalk in front of the custom house, and made from the granite steps removed in renovations to the building, which, according to Wiscasset Newspaper files, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Selectmen this month accepted what Town Manager Dennis Simmons called "this thoughtful donation" of the benches that will be in front of what is now the Sauciers' home.
What a great way to honor federal and local history, and let village-goers have a seat to take a break and take in the scenery.
And what a great job it sounds like area fire departments including Wiscasset and Woolwich did last week when fire broke out in the woods of Georgetown. Mutual aid helps rural towns and volunteer departments have the best outcome possible at an incident.
This installment's other four good things are some of the events still to come. If you read this in time, you can catch the Thursday, July 30 Wiscasset Art Walk, a pleasant and illuminating way to spend time in the village, from 4 to 7 p.m., or any part of that you can make. No luck? Next one is Aug. 27. Plenty of time to pencil it in!
Wiscasset Feed Our Scholars' Set for Success event is from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16 at Wiscasset Community Center. A press release said "every child who attends the Wiscasset schools, as well as homeschoolers who would be attending" can get their teacher-suggested supplies to start the school year.
The Friends of the Wiscasset Public Library group's big fundraiser, Bands for Books, is Labor Day, Sept. 7 at Lakehurst Lodge in Damariscotta; and Lincoln County Historical Association's Jailhouse Rock at the Old Jail, 133 Federal St., Wiscasset is Saturday, Aug. 8 at 5 p.m.
Wiscasset knows how to do good, and have a good time!
