Boothbay selectmen are seeking an estimate on repairs for the roundabout. BILL PEARSON/Boothbay Register There is something wrong with the roundabout in Boothbay. For nearly two years, town officials have received complaints about the road’s surface “undulating” as large trucks pass through. “The mix wasn’t done properly so as large trucks come in, (the surface) rolls out creating bumps. Like waves in the ocean,” Town Manager Dan Bryer said.
Bryer has contacted Maine Department of Transportation without success in resolving the problem. So now, Boothbay officials are looking to use local funds to solve a state problem.
July 22, selectmen reached a consensus to “at least seek a ballpark estimate." Bryer will contact Crooker Construction in Topsham for an estimate.
Crooker will pave Country Club Road later this summer. “Crooker is paving the Country Club Road and will make their estimate at that time,” Bryer said.
Then selectmen will decide whether to proceed with the roundabout repair. Bryer said selectmen could either use funds from Tax Increment Financing (TIF) or the municipal paving budget. Both would require a town vote, he said.
In other action, selectmen voted, 4-0, to sign a resolution supporting a grassroots effort to save the labor and delivery services at MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital on the Miles campus in Damariscotta. Resident Lizzy Anderson explained the group is contacting towns, legislators, the governor's office and MaineHealth’s Board of Trustees in an effort to stop or at least delay the closure decision.
Selectman Chuck Cunningham spoke for the board when he said the “closure” sounded all too familiar. “I was the chairman of the ‘Save St. Andrews Hospital’ and they (MaineHealth) were making the same arguments then. I wholeheartedly support what you are doing,” he said.
Selectmen held three public hearings and approved three license renewals. Two were for PGC2, LLC. Boothbay Harbor Country Club Wellness Center received a restaurant liquor license Class I, II, III and IV renewal. Boothbay Harbor Country Club received a Class I, II, III and IV restaurant liquor license renewal. Decksz LLC., doing business as Lobsterman’s Wharf, received a Class XI restaurant liquor license renewal.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 in the conference room.
