Edgecomb is down a selectman. George Chase, elected in 2024, has resigned. Chase didn't attend the July 21 board meeting. Instead, he sent an email to town administrative assistant Jessica Mague announcing his resignation. 

Chairman Forrest Carver read the announcement: "Due to personal conflicts, I will not be attending the selectmen's meeting. Under the circumstances, I believe the nearly elected candidate Stuart Smith will make a much greater contribution, to the town of Edgecomb and all of the residents, than I am capable of making. Therefore, this is my resignation effective immediately. I sincerely wish all of you all the best, and thank you as a resident, of the town of Edgecomb, for your great service to the town and community. Respectfully, George Chase."

Selectmen scheduled a special election for Tuesday, Nov. 3 to fill Chase's unexpired term. Nomination papers will be available Tuesday, Aug. 4 and must be returned by Tuesday, Sept. 22.

As for Smith, he is not ready to announce another run for selectman. He previously served three terms as a selectman, but he has lost his last two runs. In May, he lost to write-in candidate Cara Gaffney, 162-137. Smith also cited his new municipal role as the comprehensive committee chairman and health concerns as reasons he may not run. Smith, 63, is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer. "It's too early to tell whether I will run. I'm getting pressure from residents to run, and family members want me to take it easy and take care of my health," he said. 

As for Chase, he previously served on the Edgecomb School Committee and worked as Edgecomb's code enforcement officer. His term expires in May 2027.
