Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust is thrilled to announce the creation of the Muscongus Pond Preserve, a 34-acre property in Bremen generously donated by siblings Nancy and John Dean. This gift ensures the protection of water quality and honors their parents' long-held wish to see the family’s land conserved for future generations.
Nancy and John Dean's donation reflects their deep connection to the land and their commitment to preserving its natural values. The preserve safeguards 1,700 feet of frontage on Muscongus Pond (also known as Webber Pond), a cherished local swimming spot known for its clear and clean water.
Muscongus Pond stands out in the region for its exceptional water quality, which has remained stable in comparison with that of other local lakes and ponds. This is due in large part to the dedicated efforts of the Muscongus Pond Association, whose proactive initiatives educate pond owners and visitors about the importance of preventing invasive aquatic plants, minimizing turbidity from boat traffic, avoiding lawn fertilizers, and managing camp road runoff.
The Muscongus Pond Preserve boasts a diverse landscape, including a rocky shoreline, vernal pools, and forested wetlands. These habitats support a variety of plant and animal life, contributing to the ecological richness of the region.
This new preserve also expands the network of conserved lands in the area. It connects two previously conserved neighboring properties, further enhancing the ecological integrity of the region. As part of the Three Ponds, One Forest Initiative, the addition of the Muscongus Pond Preserve brings the total locally conserved area to 775 acres.
"Conservation has been very important to our family," said Nancy and John Dean. "And it gives us great pleasure to donate this property to the Coastal Rivers Land Trust. Their mission to safeguard this property for future generations for years to come aligns perfectly with our parents’ wishes."
In 2026, Coastal Rivers plans to develop a new trail that will provide public access to the pond. This trail will offer opportunities for hiking, swimming, nature observation, and enjoying the tranquil shoreline.
