Code office working with West Side Road resident on land violations
After a month's delay, Boothbay selectmen planned on imposing a land use violation fine on a Barters Island property owner which could have ranged from $1 to $2,500 during the Sept. 10 board meeting. But the West Side Road landowner Robert Reed, and Code Enforcement Officer Dan Freeney reached an agreement regarding a property cleanup.
Feeney told selectmen that Reed, Town Manager Dan Bryer and himself had reached a verbal timeline agreement on a cleanup. In January, Feeney sent Reed a notice of violation regarding the property. After not seeing sufficient cleanup progress, Feeney notified selectmen in July about the violation.
In August, selectmen tabled the agenda item until September. Chairman Chuck Cunningham claimed the file had "insufficient" evidence to base any fine. During the Sept. 10 selectmen's meeting, Bryer provided a sampling of details in the agreement. He reported the deal had a series of deadlines Reed needs to meet. "After two weeks, we will see where he is, and proceed from there," he said.
Bryer also reported Reed had inquired about renting a dumpster, and a tractor was on the property.
In other action, selectmen approved a Class I, II, III and IV restaurant liquor license renewal for Boothbay Craft Brewery, Inc. on Adams Pond Road. Selectmen approved a Central Maine Power pole permit request on Samoset Trail. The board approved a wharves and weirs permit for Craig Collins and Pamela Gardiner to rebuild a recreational pier on Blackstone Road.
Selectman Russ Pinkham updated members on the "Future of Our Schools" committee work. Boothbay and Wiscasset are planning to submit a joint application to the Maine Department of Education for building a regional grades 9-16 school. The state is sponsoring a pilot program and seeking applicants for the experimental school.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 in the conference room.
