Edgecomb’s future is needed now
Dear Editor:
The results of Edgecomb’s annual town meeting for the School Budget this past Saturday offer something worth holding onto: optimism grounded in action. With the adoption of the school budget, our community has once again demonstrated its commitment to education, even amid real and understandable concerns about rising costs.
Several voices at the meeting expressed frustration, and rightly so. The increasing cost of education places a growing burden on taxpayers, particularly in communities like ours. But this issue is not simple, nor is it one-dimensional. It is shaped by state funding formulas, enrollment trends, staffing realities, and the expectations we hold for our schools. If we focus solely on cutting costs, we risk eroding the very quality of education that makes our town a place families want to call home.
At the same time, we must broaden the conversation beyond expenses. Revenue, both local and state, must be part of the solution. Locally, this begins with leadership and vision. I urge the Select Board to initiate the creation of a new comprehensive plan that reflects where Edgecomb is today and where we want to be in the years ahead. Such a plan can serve as a road map for smart growth, balancing preservation with progress.
We must also be intentional about attracting new businesses to our town. Edgecomb has long been viewed as a pass-through, a place people drive through on their way elsewhere. It’s time to change that narrative. With its location and character, Edgecomb has the potential to become a center of the region, a destination rather than a corridor.
Strategic development, thoughtful growth, and community buy-in are essential. This is not about unchecked expansion, but about shaping a future that supports our schools, strengthens our tax base, and enhances the quality of life for all residents.
The challenges are real, but so is the opportunity. Edgecomb’s future isn’t something to wait for, it’s something we must build now, together.
