Down East Gallery to include coffee roastery
A small batch coffee roastery is coming to Edgecomb this summer. Feb. 19, the Edgecomb Planning Board approved Brad Betts' application for a new use at his 146 Boothbay Road property. Betts and wife Danielle operate Down East Gallery and will add a coffee roastery. The property's previous use was for residential and retail art gallery. The new designation adds coffee roastery.
The board held a site plan review and later approved Betts' application to add another use for the property.
A small batch roaster, with a 20-pound capacity, in an existing structure, is about 375 square feet, according to the application. The roastery area will be used exclusively for coffee bean storage, roasting and packing. "My family and I have been roasting at our property in East Boothbay for over 10 years. Having a second roaster at this property will allow us to roast when we are on-site running the art gallery/event business," Brad Betts wrote in his application.
The Bettses were represented by their son, Sam, during the meeting.
The board reviewed a second site plan proposal, one presented by Ron Cohen, a partner with wife Juliette Cohen and Rebecca Abbott in Twisted Willow Farms. The applicant is Above and Beyond Scheduling, a company owned by Juliette Cohen. She owns the property. The partners plan on operating a 20-stall barn and riding arena at 138 River Road.
The applicant proposed removal of two barns and two sheds, and building two new structures: a 20-stall barn and indoor riding arena. The board scheduled a site walk for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. A public hearing was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19.
The board meets next at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in the conference room.
