June 10, Community School District (CSD) school committee recognized the results of the CSD budget validation referendum vote, which passed in both Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor on June 9. The board voted to send a certified copy of the “Computation and Declaration of Votes” to CSD member towns.
The board unanimously approved Emmett Nunes for a first-year probationary contract as the secondary history teacher at the high school. Second-year probationary and continuing contracts for faculty were also approved.
During a prior meeting, the committee reviewed several policy changes, including updates to the standard procedure for physical restraint and seclusion of a student, a "bell-to-bell" cell phone ban that would include personal laptops and use of a multifunction school activity bus for small-group travel. The physical restraint/seclusion and the school bus policy were approved June 10. The cell phone ban was tabled.
In other business, Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Coordinator Lisa Sharpe gave an update on the CSD’s 2027 ESEA application. Public comments on the application are accepted until June 30. Email lsharp@aos98schools.org
According to a meeting handout, the CSD receives Federal Title IA, IIA and IVA funds under ESEA to support efforts to increase literacy and math achievement, support students’ social and emotional learning and improve multi-tiered systems of support to help all students. It is anticipated that the CSD will receive $172,301.85, a 3.7% increase from last year ($166,116.51).
These funds will go to support literacy intervention for at-risk K-4 students during the regular school year. If funding allows, math intervention, summer literacy programming and professional development will also be explored.
