Featuring the breathtaking masterpieces which have captivated audiences for centuries, this new film from multi-award-winning directors David Bickerstaff and Phil Grabsky immerses audiences in the hidden narratives of Caravaggio’s life, piecing together clues embedded within his incredible art and bringing in leading experts from around the world. The intriguing self-depictions within his works — sometimes disguised, sometimes in plain sight — offer a rare window into his psyche and personal struggles.
Caravaggio’s masterpieces are some of art’s most instantly recognizable. No one else uses his signature blend of dramatic light, intense naturalism and bold, striking figures. His incredible paintings have captivated audiences for centuries. But there lies a deeper mystery — one that still beckons us to explore. What do these masterpieces reveal about the man behind the brush? Accompany us as we explore the intriguing clues that help us understand the life of this remarkable man.
Director Phil Grabsky reveals: “Over the past decade with Exhibition on Screen, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the lives and works of many of history’s greatest artists. Caravaggio has always loomed large in my mind – an artist of unmatched intensity, technical brilliance and dramatic force. Despite this, he is often reduced to a kind of tabloid figure; the brawling, dangerous outsider with a sword in one hand and a brush in the other. In this film we set out to peel back the layers of caricature and show the real man. Yes, there were conflicts and court cases, but they are a fraction of a much bigger, more intricate, and frankly more interesting story. Caravaggio was deeply thoughtful, spiritually inquisitive, and artistically revolutionary. He believed deeply in the power of realism to connect with people on an emotional level. He chose models from the streets not to shock, but to speak truth. He painted saints with dirt under their fingernails because he understood that the divine resides in the real, the raw, the human. That takes courage. It takes conviction. And it takes a kind of empathy that few artists before or since have managed to express so powerfully. This is not a film about a man in the shadows. This is a film about an artist who used light to reveal the soul.”
