Burge, Van Dyke are Turkey Trot honorees
The annual Turkey Trot, sponsored by faculty and students at Boothbay Region schools, is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27 starting at 9 a.m.Just like last year, it will start at the lower field next to the high school and proceed behind the elementary school where the cross country trail is located.
There is a change this year as we will be offering a shorter course, who those whoprefer to go at a slower pace or walk. We are trying to appeal to as many participants as the Turkey Trot is as much of a social event as it is a race.
There is no registration for this event, but we are asking everyone to sign in, so we can make sure at the end everyone is accounted for. Donations are greatly appreciated as all money raised will go towards continuedupgrading of the cross country trail.
Members of the BRHS girls and boys cross country teams, along Interact Club students, will be situated throughout the courses to assist with directions.
This year’s honorees are Sue Burge and Nancy Van Dyke. They were a unanimous choice by the Turkey Trot Committee because of all they have done for so many Boothbay area students through “Set for Success.”
This program, the brainchild of Sue Burge and supported by the Community Resource Council, it supplied all students with needed school supplies. Nancy Van Dyke, who Burge calls her “right arm” came on board shortly after this program started.
The two were a dynamic pair for the 10 years they oversaw Set for Success, when it was held at the Boothbay Region YMCA. At least 400 pre-K to eighth grade students participated annually. The program expanded, providing clothing, shoes, haircuts, wholesome foods and at one time there were 40 individual stations from the Boothbay peninsula offering something special for children and their parents.
The Turkey Trot Committee is hoping for a record attendance at this year’s event. What better way is there to start your Thanksgiving holiday and not feel so guilty later in the day you have a second helping of food?
Our mascot “Gobblezilla” will be on display. Feel free to take a family photo with this colorful turkey. Rumor has itthat a well-knownfamily physician will be present wearing his turkey costume. He, likeGobblezilla, loves to have his photo taken, so feel free to ask him.
The only downside to this event is if the weather is uncooperative, the event will have to be canceled. Please keep your fingers crossed and think ofgood weatherconditions for Thanksgiving Day.
