BSSC High Tide
We at Boothbay Sea and Science Center are very pleased to learn that many of our students and instructors have gone on to continue their studies and careers in the marine field. Periodically we reach out to our alumni to check on their careers. This is the latest in a series we call BSSC High Tide:
Jane Marvin
BSSC Mizzen 2013
Jane, granddaughter of Christopher and Jane (Deezie) Flower and Joan and the late Andy Marvin, allof Boothbay Harbor, was one of five Mizzens to attend the sailing program at Boothbay Sea and Science Center when we opened our doors in June of 2013 at Wotton’s Wharf in Boothbay Harbor. Today she is attending Maine Maritime Academy, majoring in vessel operations technology and minoring in international business and logistics. We asked her about her experiences since her BSSC season and she wrote:
“Sailing at BSSC was one of my earliest and favorite memories on sailing, especially because I spent them with my brother and cousin. Having counselors who loved sailing and were passionate about teaching also grew my love for sailing and was my foundation for wanting to be independent and confident on the water.
"I then went on to summer sailing at camp at the Portland Yacht Club and fell in love with being on the water but never considered myself a racer or very competitive. I also never really saw myself sailing in high school let alone college.
"I joined the Portland High school sailing team out of curiosity my freshman year and quickly realized that I was very passionate about racing and would go on to do it in keelboats and dinghies for the rest of my life.
"My sophomore year I was accepted to St. Georges school which has one of the top sailing teams in the country and has won multiple national championships.
"I had a bit of culture shock being on a team with some of the most talented sailors in the country. I had never been around people so passionate and knowledgeable about sailing before and it really motivated me.
"I joined the keelboat team of four people as the only girl and went on to nationals two years in a row getting 4th place both years.
"I now sail at MMA and have been a big part of starting the womens sailing team here and started skippering A fleet at regattas my freshman year. The womens team has become a big point of pride in my life and the girls and myself are really devoted to growing and improving the team especially because we are at a school with so few girls. Last summer I sailed and worked on the US 22 Intrepid, US 21 American Eagle. I did day charters on Intrepid with a crew of three and then raced on Intrepid doing pit and grinding with a crew of 16 and I trimmed main for American Eagle with an all womens crew of 16.”
