BRHS senior Ross Gaffney takes nation’s best at New Balance Indoor National Championship
While most high school seniors are eyeing the finish line of their final semester, Boothbay Region High School’s own Ross Gaffney was eyeing a different finish line this past weekend. Representing Boothbay Harbor with pride, Ross traveled to the world-class New Balance Track & Field Center in Boston to compete in the Boys' Race Walk at the prestigious New Balance Indoor National Championship.
The energy at the New Balance Headquarters was nothing short of electric. As one of the premier events in high school athletics, the meet was a high-octane blend of competitive intensity and celebration. Upon arrival, athletes were treated like the elites they are, receiving custom New Balance National gear bags and a special commemorative token. These tokens granted competitors a chance to "win big" on exclusive items at the flagship Headquarters store, adding an extra layer of excitement to an already unforgettable weekend.
The boys' race walk is a grueling test of both speed and technical discipline. Competing in a stacked field of 14 of the fastest walkers in the country, Ross held his ground in the sea of talent. In a race defined by grit and strategic pacing, Ross crossed the finish line with a stellar time of 7:51.97, securing an impressive 8th place finish nationally.
"Competing on a stage this big is a testament to the hard work Ross has put in all season," said his father Michael Gaffney. "Watching him represent Boothbay against the best in the nation was a proud moment for our entire community."
Ross’s performance in Boston marks a high point in his senior athletic career, proving that small-town dedication can lead to big-city success. As he returns to Boothbay, he brings back more than just a new gear bag; he brings the distinction of being one of the top eight high school race walkers in the country.
