Why the CSD Board needs to change
Dear Editor:
On April 9, the School Administration reported that Boothbay Harbor enrollment had increased by 9%, resulting in a budget that incorrectly calculated cost sharing between the two towns. For a $14.5 million budget, it is concerning that this error was not caught sooner. Only one board member (Perkins) raised questions at the time, and a correction was not provided until April 13.
Second, recent school audit reports indicate that the current CSD Board has operated with deficits for three consecutive years. During that period, more than $1 million has been drawn from the unassigned fund—the district’s savings—to cover expenses. Early indications suggest that last year may also have ended with a deficit.
This pattern raises important concerns about long-term financial stewardship and sustainability.
As voters consider the upcoming election, it is worth focusing on the qualifications and priorities needed to move the district forward. Patty Minerich is the only candidate who:
-
Brings substantial experience managing budgets and demonstrates a commitment to fiscal responsibility
-
Understands the realities of declining enrollment and its impact on schools
-
Appreciates how emerging technologies, including AI, are shaping the workforce for new graduates
-
Has shown initiative and commitment by engaging directly with the community and earning a place on the ballot
Our schools are a cornerstone of the community. Strong leadership and sound financial stewardship are essential to ensuring they remain so.
