Geoff Smith hired as Boothbay Harbor Public Works foreman
After an extensive search and interviews with potential candidates, Geoff Smith has accepted the position of public works foreman for the Town of Boothbay Harbor. Effective May 11, 2026, Geoff will begin his new role, bringing both long-standing municipal experience and a background in construction management.
Smith has served the town since 2012 as code enforcement officer and local plumbing inspector. In that position, he has worked closely with residents, contractors, and town boards on permitting, inspections, and enforcement of local regulations, while supporting day-to-day municipal operations.
The new role represents a lateral transition within the town staff. Town Manager Julia Latter notified the board of her decision to hire Smith on Monday night. Smith submitted his resignation from his current positions to her today, effective May 8, 2026, and this will be presented to the Board of Selectmen for acceptance at an upcoming meeting.
Before joining our town and working previously as a code enforcement officer in other municipalities, Smith owned and operated a commercial and residential construction company for more than 20 years, managing projects and supervising crews across multiple states. His experience includes project planning, field operations, and team leadership. Geoff has also demonstrated strong fiscal management, including budget responsibility, cost control, and oversight of project expenditures.
As public works foreman, Smith will oversee the department's daily operations, including infrastructure maintenance, project coordination, and staff supervision. The position plays a key role in maintaining roads, supporting winter operations, and ensuring the consistent, reliable function of the town’s public infrastructure throughout the year.
“Geoff brings a strong combination of field experience and municipal knowledge that aligns well with the needs of our public works department,” said Town Manager Julia Latter. “His familiarity with Boothbay Harbor’s infrastructure, regulatory environment, and daily operations allows him to step into this new role with continuity and efficiency, and to provide steady leadership for the department moving forward. I look forward to continued efficient and cost-effective operations within the department, with a focus on proactive maintenance, resource management, and long-term infrastructure improvements.”
