Boothbay wins final football game of season, 56-12, over Mount View
It was the last high school football game for Boothbay seniors Will Sledge, Hayden Rines, Keegan Murray and Griffin Yereance, and the 56-12 victory over Mount View Oct. 24 was definitely a night to remember. Murray will remember the night for a reason which had nothing to do with winning or losing.
"Last night with the family," he said after the game. Murray didn't play due to a broken hand. "I had a blast tonight. I would've rather played, but it was great to spend this night with my teammates."
Boothbay roared to a 22-0 first quarter lead until Mount View retaliated with an Edward Powers kick-off touchdown return. But that was more of a speed bump than a momentum killer. Running back Peyton Barter added three more touchdowns to the three he scored in the first quarter, and Mount View never mounted a strong rally.
This was Boothbay's third win of the season against four losses. The Seahawk record was good enough to qualify the Maine 8-man Small School Southern Conference playoffs, but Boothbay declined the invitation. Entering the final week, Boothbay was down Murray, Shawn Gamage and Aron Geddes along with several others playing with nagging injuries. Boothbay was slated to play 8-man football powerhouse Old Orchard Beach in the post season. The Seagulls defeated Boothbay, 60-0, earlier this season.
"Tonight's it," said Coach Ed Crocker. "We have so many injuries already and we know what the outcome would be. We have to think about other sports and decided to end it after tonight's game."
Mount View ended the season at 0-7.
