Boothbay Region Lions Club
The Boothbay Region Lions Club met for a regular meeting on Nov. 13. This was our first meeting in our new location at the East Boothbay Fire House. Thanks to all who helped in cleaning out the old club house and moving to our new home. We especially thank the town of Boothbay and the Boothbay Fire Department for their generosity in allowing us to use their building for our meetings and activities.
Our guest speaker for this meeting was Giselle Armstrong, founder of Action for Animals. She told us what prompted her to form this foundation and spoke of her desire to help people keep their animals. They work with other agencies to help those who otherwise would not be able to afford veterinary bills from an unexpected accident or illness. Jaymes Shive explained they are a 501 (c)(3) foundation and requests are based on criteria set forth. There is a $500 maximum for help per individual per year. Betsy Pitcher, also with the foundation, emphasized how we all love our pets and how heartbreaking it can be to have to choose between an unforeseen vet bill and food. This is the only foundation of its kind in Maine and is focused on helping those in Lincoln County. The club learned much from this group and look forward to seeing how they grow in the days and weeks ahead. They are always looking for volunteers.
Lions Wendy, Norm, Karen, Pete, and Barry helped with the Red Cross Blood Drive at the Y on Nov. 7. The next blood drive will be in January.
We had two entries in the Lions International Peace Poster contest this year. First place went to Kai Pitcher, and second place to Lucas Brown. The first place poster will be entered in the Lions International contest coming up soon. The contest was judged on originality, theme representation and following contest rules on size, etc. Many thanks to BRES art teacher Jessica Nadeau for helping with this event.
At this meeting, we voted to give a donation to the Waldoboro Lions Club fundraiser to go toward the purchase of a vision screening machine to be available to use in the Midcoast area. We also voted to give a donation to the St. Andrews Free Bed Fund annual drive.
