Boothbay Region Gold Ball team honored
The fanfare for winning the championship was a bit tempered compared to when it actually happened 30 years ago, but the memories, thrills and happiness of the season when the Boothbay Region High School girls basketball team brought home the school’s first Gold Ball was rekindled Dec. 6.
That Saturday, the current BRHS girls basketball program hosted a luncheon for the winning team at BRHS.
Eight members of the championship team and their coach David Landry were on hand for the two-hour event, which included a showing of the championship game in the BRHS auditorium after the luncheon.
In attendance were co-captains Lauren (Webster) Brown and Lisa Carbone, along with Sarah (Maddocks) Stedte, Beth (Smyth) Handley, Samantha McLellan, Laurie (Blackman) Dickinson, Kara (Smyth) Bryer, and Lesley (Carter) Blethen.
Unable to attend were Melissa Hodgdon, Kim (Erwin) Genzler, Sarah (Peters) Sample, Lisa Lunt, Julie (Heaberlin) Simmons and Jenny (Giles) Dionne. Attending for Melissa Hodgdon were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hodgdon of East Boothbay.
During the luncheon, each member of the 1984 team received a corsage and a binder of press clippings of the 1983-84 season prepared by BRHS Athletic Administrator Allan Crocker. Each player spoke about their memories of the season before the group went to the auditorium.
Following the showing of the championship game film, Landry talked about the magical season and how it all came together through hard work, forming trust and playing together, a theme echoed by the talks given by Lauren Brown and Lisa Carbone after Landry.
Nearly all of the basketball players in the current program, as well as their parents, were on hand to experience the thrill of that basketball season.
The event was a success, said current girls coach Tanner Grover, who was one of the organizers of the luncheon, with the help of Crocker, parents and several Boosters Club members.
