When discussing mysteries and thrillers I'm often asked “What does the expression “whodunnits” mean? My research tells me that it is a colloquial term used in place of “Who has done it.”
The name became popular in the very early 1900's, with the upswing of simple mysteries. Authors presented a basic theme, sometimes with humor, and a unique sleuth. As their popularity grew and with the demand for more, creating a series became the norm.
Nancy Drew introduced me to the world of mysteries. My favorite is “The Hidden Staircase.” I later moved on to Mary Roberts Rinehart and her most popular “The Circular Staircase.”
As we moved from the 20th century into the 21st many more authors appeared on the scene. I have
listed a few that you might enjoy.
B.C. Beaton, The Agatha Raisin Mysteries
Alexander McCall Smith, #1 Ladies Detective Agency
Rhys Bowen, Molly Murphy Mysteries
Leslie Meiser, Lucy Stone Mysteries
Joanna Fluke, Hannah Swenson Mysteries (includes recipes)
Barbara Ross Smith, Maine Clambake Mysteries
Lea Wait, Antique Print Mysteries
Katherine Hall Page, Faith Fairchild Mysteries (includes recipes)
Our library has a great collection of these authors and their works along with so many more. Check our catalog or browse our shelves.
