Boothbay baseball opener a cold, soggy home loss

BILL PEARSON/Boothbay RegisterThe Boothbay baseball season began with a bright, promising start, taking a 1-0 lead over rival Winthrop on April 22 at Sherman Field. Leadoff hitter Blake Durgan reached second base on an error and, later, driven home on a Casey Phelps double.
In the second inning, Winthrop had runners on second and third with two out. The Winthrop batter lifted a high, lazy fly ball into the outfield which was misplayed resulting in a second error on the infielder's throw into dead ball territory. All three Winthrop runners scored.
The final score ended at 19-1 after the fifth inning. Winthrop scored 11 more runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. Boothbay managed the one run on a hit and left four on base.
Starting pitcher Phelps pitched three innings, allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three. He gave up three runs which were all unearned. Durgan pitched one-third of an inning. He allowed eight hits, eight earned runs, walked five and struck out none. Aiden Locke relieved him. He pitched two-thirds of an inning. He allowed one hit, five runs with two being earned, four walks and struck out one. Avery Fowlie pitched the fifth inning. He allowed three hits, three runs all earned, walked two and struck out one.
Boothbay is now 0-1. Winthrop is now 1-0. Boothbay travels to Monmouth April 24 to play Mommouth Academy (0-0) and returns home Monday, April 27 to host Hall-Dale (1-0).
