Boothbay area author releases first album at 77
Boothbay-area resident and longtime author Skip Simonds has released his first music album, "Get Outta the Boat," now available on major streaming platforms including Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, Apple Music, and for purchase on iTunes.
Though best known locally as a published science fiction author, Simonds, 77, has been involved in music for many years. He previously performed one of the lead roles in the ensemble musical "Tanglin’ Hearts," participated in local musical reviews and open mic performances, and was a multiple-time award winner in competitions sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Over the past year, Simonds shifted his creative focus from writing novels to writing and recording original music as a new adventure in retirement. The album blends reflective storytelling, humor, and contemporary life experiences, with songs ranging from personal reflections to upbeat and encouraging tracks.
The title, "Get Outta the Boat," reflects a theme Simonds said is about taking creative risks later in life.
“I never expected to be writing music, much less releasing an album at this age. But apparently, creativity doesn’t retire.”
Simonds credits much of his musical development to his wife, Betsey deGroff, whom he describes as both a gifted voice teacher and his greatest encourager.
“Betsey saw musical ability in me long before I fully believed it myself,” he said.
What began with writing and singing a few songs for his wife gradually grew into a full-length album.
“It’s never too late to try something new,” Simonds said.
