This Saturday, June 6, will be an important day for veterans and for everyone in our community who believes supporting veterans matters. The VA Maine Veterans Expo will be held at the Boothbay Railway Village from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., bringing together federal, state, and organizations from around the State that provide services and support to veterans and their families.
The VA hosts these expos four times a year in different parts of Maine to help veterans better understand and access the benefits they have earned. Representatives from the Veterans Benefits Administration and the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services will be available to answer questions about federal and state benefits. Veterans who are not enrolled in the VA healthcare system can learn about eligibility and enroll on site.
The Expo also gives veterans the opportunity to speak directly with VA leadership about concerns or problems they may be experiencing with the healthcare system. No healthcare system is perfect, and issues do arise, but they cannot be corrected unless leadership hears directly from those affected. Many people in the community believe veterans are not always receiving the support they deserve. Events like this help demonstrate the wide range of services that are available, while also identifying areas where improvements may still be needed.
Representatives from Maine’s congressional delegation also attend, giving veterans and family members the opportunity to share concerns and suggestions directly with those who can help influence policy. Through organizations such as the Military Officers Association of America, VFW, DAV, and American Legion veterans’ issues are documented and brought before Congress and VA leadership. While progress can sometimes seem slow, many improvements in veterans’ programs and benefits have come from Maine veterans speaking up and being heard.
There will be over 30 organizations represented. Some you know, like Honor Flight Maine and The Boothbay V.E.T.S. trailers, and some you may not have heard of, but provide incredible services to veterans and veteran families. At the HFM booth veterans can learn about, and register, for future trips to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.
Veterans with any level of VA disability may also qualify for programs through Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation and its Veterans No Boundaries (VNB) program. In August, the organization hosts a free family weekend at Fernwood Cove on Island Pond in Harrison, Maine, offering traditional summer camp activities and recreation for veterans and their families. During the winter, VNB also sponsors a weekend at Sunday River, where veterans and family members can receive ski instruction and participate in numerous indoor and outdoor activities.
As important as this event is for veterans, it is also an event for the entire community. It provides an opportunity to better understand the challenges veterans face, the services available to them, and the dedication of those working to support them.
The free event will also include food, entertainment, free give-a-ways, and family activities throughout the day, fitting for an event hosted at our own Railroad Village Museum.
