72nd Strawberry Festival June 27
On Saturday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St. in Wiscasset will be rolling out the red carpet for all strawberry lovers searching for a bowl with homemade biscuit covered in crushed fresh berries and topped with a healthy dollop of real whipped cream or locally sourced ice cream. Talk about heaven on earth!
For 72 seasons, interrupted by the covid epidemic shutdown, the members of St. Philip’s have steadfastly presented their shortcakes. The day is a major contributor toward the support of the Church and its outreach missions, but also is a happy time for reuniting with friends near and far. Through the years, the festival’s other activities have expanded and contracted, but shortcakes have always been a dependably delicious way to kick off the summer season.
Plan to spend some time perusing the various interesting craftspeople’s tables, as well as the church’s Bargain Basement, bake table, plant table, hotdog stand (There’s something about eating hotdogs in the open air…), and Forward in Faith table. Listen to the dulcet tones of musicians, Mat O’Donnell and Terry Heller. Take in the silent auction area where you might just find yourself top bidder on a neat treasure. Attend the noontime pie auction with local celebrity, Big Al Cohen, auctioneering. It’s all a celebration with a cause.
Lots to do right at St. Philip’s, but check out the historic buildings listed in the town’s Museum in the Streets, many within comfortable walking distance of Hodge St., not to mention the many interesting shops and eateries of Wiscasset.
