36ers mired in 2-game losing streak
The Boothbay 36ers are in the midst of a two-game losing streak with losses July 18 to Central Maine (Waterville) and July 19 to New Roderrick-Crosby (Farmington). Boothbay fell to 8-4 in the Maine State American Legion standings.
Against Central Maine, Boothbay fell behind 9-0 by allowing five unearned runs. Central Maine scored two in the first, two in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth. Central Maine was aided by three Boothbay errors.
Starting pitcher Hayden Chase pitched four innings, allowed nine runs (four earned), on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. In relief, both Braeden Toothaker and Finn Harkins eached pitched one inning and allowed one walk apiece. The 36ers scored one run on five hits. Aidan Sanborn doubled. Harkins tripled and singled twice. Blade Brann singled. Boothbay lost 9-1.
On July 19, Roderick Crosby beat Boothbay 10-6. The Flyers built a 5-2 lead after three innings. Boothbay rallied with two runs in the fourth, but Roderick-Crosby scored four times in the bottom of the inning, extending their lead to 9-4. Boothbay scored three more in the fifth, and Roderick-Crobsy scored its final run in the fifth.
Starting pitcher Liam Jacobs pitched 2.1 innings, and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit. He struck out four and walked six. In relief, Harkins pitched 2.1 innings, allowed seven runs (two earned), walked two and struck out two. Sanborn pitched one inning and allowed no runs or hits. He struck out two. Boothbay committed four errors in the loss.
This two-game stretch completed the 36ers' regular season schedule. It also ended a span of eight games in a nine days.
"We were some tired, banged up boys last week," said manager Adam Harkins.
On July 22, Boothbay hosts the winner of the Kennebec Sturgeons and Old Town/Orono Twins tournament preliminary round. The winner advances to the state tournament on Saturday, July 26 at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.
