On Saturday, Aug. 22, visitors can experience the thrill of stepping inside a life-size inflatable humpback whale named “Chunk.” This immersive, interactive experience for participants of all ages explores the wonders of marine life and is designed and conducted by award-winning, nationally recognized wildlife educator Jessica Woodend. The 43-foot inflatable whale can accommodate up to 20 children or 15 adults at a time.
The whale experience is just the beginning. Department of Marine Resources (DMR) scientists and educators will also be on hand to highlight the marine mammals of the Gulf of Maine and the research DMR conducts to better understand them. Visitors can listen to whale calls, dive into the fascinating world of microscopic plankton—the tiny animals that help feed some of the ocean’s largest animals—and learn about the equipment scientists use to track whales.
There will also be whale-themed arts and crafts, along with opportunities to tour the Maine State Aquarium and Learning Lab as usual.
Maine State Aquarium is located at 194 McKown Point Road in West Boothbay Harbor. This event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Online reservations are required, with tickets available for specific one-hour time slots. To reserve a spot, scan the QR code or visit the Maine State Aquarium website at https://www.maine.gov/dmr/programs/education-division/aquarium.
Although the official 2026 season ends Sept. 6, the Maine State Aquarium is excited to offer extended public hours throughout September. In addition to welcoming school groups, the aquarium will be open to the public on Saturdays in September from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Come explore the Gulf of Maine, meet the scientists who study it, and have some fin-tastic fun before the season comes to an end!
