The standing ovation. LISA KRISTOFF/Boothbay RegisterThe U.S. Navy Northeast Band Pops Ensemble concert at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor drew just shy of a full house Tuesday, June 23. In celebration of the 250th Fourth of July and the region's Windjammer Days, the one-hour show culminated in a standing ovation.
Narration preceded many of the selections that followed the events of the Revolutionary War through the Siege of Yorktown in October 1781. With the aid of France, all active fighting ended and, in Sept. 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris with England would be signed by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and John Hay.
The 30-member military band was conducted by Chief Warrant Officer 2 John Page. The U.S. Navy Pops Ensemble played "Captain America March," the "Star Spangled Banner," "Barnum and Bailey's favorite," "Yankee Doodle," "Shenandoah," "Battle Pavane" about the Battle of Saratoga; "March Grandioso," "The American Sailor" and "Bugler's Holiday," which featured three Navy buglers.
Songs some audience members lent their voices to included "America The Beautiful" and selections from "The Sound of Music."
The performance culminated with the calling of all branches of America's armed forces in the audience to stand when theirs was called: the Air Force, Space Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army and, with the largest number of audience members, the Navy. The Army had the second most.
To close out the concert, the band played "Stars and Stripes Forever."
