STEVE EDWARDS/Boothbay RegisterUniversity of Maine’s University Singers peformed for the first time at Boothbay Region High School March 20. Among the acapella performers was BRHS 2024 graduate Suzannah “Suzie” Edwards.
Like all members of this choir, Edwards auditioned to become part of this extraordinary group of singers. She is also a member of one of the two smaller Singers groups, U Maine Renaissance, an all-treble group. The Maine Steiners is comprised of tenor-bass singers.
“Performing at my alma mater with Singers felt so special,” Edwards said of her return to the BRHS stage. “Being able to advocate for smaller schools music programs, and show how easy it is to continue music after high school, hit very close to home. I hope by seeing Singers, younger students continue to make music throughout their lives like us.”
Many members of the audience approached Edwards post performance to comment on how wonderful and moving it was. “It made me feel so very proud of our group, and made it worth all of the hard work we’ve put in throughout the year.”
A few of her favorite selections from the First Day of Spring concert included a song from “Carousel,” “This was a Real Nice Clambake;” “All Of Us” from “Considering Matthew Shepard,” our Alumni piece “Jabberwocky” by Sam Pottle, and one not included in the BRHS program, “Meet Me Here” from Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson.
If you know Suzie Edwards, you know she is always busy performing and studying or getting a jam on with friend musicians and singers. Two other ensembles she sings with are Opera Workshop and Euphony (the use of words and sounds that create a harmonious, pleasing effect, often used in poetry and music), and Orono’s Chamber Choir.
Upcoming shows include March 28 and 29 with the University Singers; April 11 with the Opera Workshop and April 18 with UMaine Renaissance.
Edwards is a psychology major with a concentration in developmental psychology, with a minor in music.
