Many people communicate by text every day. But many don't realize that in a real emergency, texting 9-1-1 is also an option when calling isn't safe or possible. 

The Lincoln County Regional Communications Center is encouraging residents to learn when and how to use Maine's Text-to-9-1-1 service. 

A voice call is still the fastest and most effective way to reach emergency services. However, if you are in a situation where speaking could put you in danger, you're unable to speak, or you have a hearing or speech disability, sending a text to 9-1-1 can connect you with a trained emergency communications specialist who can get help on the way. 

"Emergencies don't always happen in situations where someone can safely make a phone call," said Tara Doe, Director of Lincoln County Regional Communications Center. "Knowing that you can text 9-1-1 when you can't call could make all the difference." 

When should you text 9-1-1? 

Use Text-to-9-1-1 only if: 

• You cannot safely speak because someone nearby could hear you. 

• You are unable to speak because of an injury or medical emergency. 

• You are Deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability. 

• A voice call simply isn't possible. 

If you can safely make a voice call, call 9-1-1 instead. Voice calls allow dispatchers to gather information more quickly and help responders reach you faster. 

How to text 9-1-1 

1. Open your messaging app. 

1. Enter 911 in the "To" field. 

1. Start your first message with your location. 

1. Briefly describe what's happening. 

1. Answer the dispatcher's questions and follow their instructions. 

A few important reminders 

• Always include your location first. Your exact location may not automatically appear with a text. 

• Don't send photos, videos, GIFs, or emojis 

• Don't use group messages. 

• Never text and drive. Pull over safely if possible. 

• If you can call, call. Texting is the next best option, not the first.
