The SYC Annual Seguin Island Open Race was held on Saturday with five boats on the Division I starting line and seven boats in Division II. The wind started out a bit light but filled in during the early afternoon. Our Principal Race Officer, Chace Brinegar, had Division I on an 11.1 nautical mile course from the Cedarbush Red Nun to 2SR, over to Griffiths Head, up to Harding Ledge and then back home. The Division II course was 4.6 nautical miles from the Cedarbush Red Nun to the Mark Island bell, up to Bull Ledge and then back to the finish. Thank you to everyone who came out from SYC and BHYC and congratulations to our top three finishers in each division (corrected time):
Division I: First place – Peter Wolcott and crew on J-80 Roots, second place – Arden Carleton and crew on J-80 Gho2t, third place – SYC instructors with Joe Duffy at the helm on J-24 Draco.
Division II: First place – Hadden Brinegar and Taylor Smith on c420 McHaste, second place – Pete and Kate Smith and crew on Ensign Gribble, third place – Chris Jacobs and crew on Rhodes 19 Rhododendron.
Saturday Night’s Lobster Bake was a fantastic evening of perfect weather and delicious food. Special thanks to Cozy’s Dockside who provided lobster, chicken, mussels, roasted red potatoes, corn on the cob, and salad. An array of desserts was provided by a team of volunteers. Another big thank you goes out to all of our bakers and set-up/clean-up crew! We simply could not have had such a great event without the assistance of: Pauline and Stan Walker, Janet Duchaine, Barbara Widmayer, Jeannine Phippen, Diane Smith, Lauren Brown, Allison Curwen, Anne Jacobs, Pete Smith, Will Keller and all of the wonderful attendees who helped cleanup with taking trash to the dumpster, organizing Clynk recycling and carrying tables back into the Clubhouse. We appreciate all the efforts of everyone who made the night one to remember. Nancy Doyle, thank you for taking the lead on the event and coordinating all things Lobster Bake! Now onto the next party!
On Saturday, Aug. 1 we have the 13th annual Rock the Boat 5K Road Race. Registration fees increase on Saturday so sign up now! You can walk or run and either way, there will be watermelon waiting for you at the finish. Saturday night we have a free BBQ at the club. Please bring a side or dessert to share. After the BBQ, stay for our second annual Trivia Night at 7 p.m.
As we round the mark towards August, we are checking our lists and making sure we do all the things that summer on Southport is known for. The blueberries are ripe and the weather has been fabulous! We look forward to seeing you out on the Sheepscot or at the club.
