Another wonderful week of Southport Yacht Club sailing camp has come and gone, the first week in a long time without any regattas, which meant that the whole community of the Junior Yacht Club was present to enjoy the week together. 

The week was kicked off by only one swim test this week, which Sally Rose Carroll Cutler passed with flying colors.

The morning class participated in many practice races and long sails, and also worked on knots. The morning class finished off their week with an electric game of “Alphabet Soup” where sponges with letters written on them are thrown in the water around the boats and the players must attempt to spell words with the letters they gather.

The afternoon class had a great week, where the Opti Program had a very action packed and fun week where they did two race days, a day for flipping drills, a cruise to the Mark Island bell and a game of tag along with various practice start drills. The turnabouts worked on their close hauled sailing skills, and did a cruise to the Mark Island bell and another cruise to the Round House, with other days dedicated to practice starts and practice races.

The 420 Program began their week by working on downwind start practice races to sharpen spinnaker skills, and the light wind on Tuesday led the program to practice some shorter races. On Wednesday, the group worked on team racing to sharpen strategic skills and did some friendly team racing on Thursday which turned very competitive rather quickly.

On Friday, the BHYC 420 program came over to Cozy Harbor to partake in an afternoon of team racing. The two clubs split up into three teams of 3, where the races were scheduled in a “King of the Hill” style, where the winner would stay on. The races were mostly dominated by one of Southport’s teams which was Nathan Phippen and Graydon Smith, Ily Harrington and Liam Donahue, and Lucy Browne and Audrey Eastwood. The group lost their first race, but then got back on the course and never looked back, winning the next four races and then heading in for the day.

On Thursday, the club held the final Ice Cream Social which was very successful and everyone had a great time.

Next week, the Yacht Club is holding the final bingo of the year, which will be Prize Bingo on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Yacht Club is looking forward to new memories being made and some more beautiful days that remind us of why we love the club so much.
