This week was another wonderful week for SYC as we approach the halfway mark of the season, we all can’t believe how fast time is flying this summer.

The week was kicked off by seven brave new morning class kids doing their swim test to start their sailing journey at SYC, Hayden Kawa, Theo Kurtz, Emma Pearl Howard, Clara Woods, Isabel Woods, Jonah Kurtz and Miles Satow all braved the cold waters of Cozy Harbor and passed their swim test with flying colors.

The morning class had a great week with many awesome cruises to help sharpen basic sailing skills and a very competitive game of alphabet soup on thursday that riled up the whole community. The afternoon class kicked off the week with an awesome day which included the 420 program taking part in a cruise in very high winds to Reid State Park, then to Five Islands dock, where the sailors got ice cream, and then got back in their boats to return to Cozy Harbor.

The 420 and Opti programs then began preparing to travel to Haraseeket, for their Junior Sailing Regatta, where some highlights in the 420 Program were Hadden Brinegar and Gabriella Moenn kicking off the regatta with a first place finish and carried that momentum to finish in the top 3 overall by the end of the regatta, the program did well overall, with Nathan Phippen and Graydon Smith placing 6th overall, Mabel Kaler and Taylor Smith placing 12th overall and Ily Harrington and Liam Donahue placing 16th overall out of 35 boats that were on the line for those two days. Although conditions were very heavy, the sailors all had a great time and worked very hard to keep their boat flat in those 30 mph gusts that were coming through the venue.

The Optis had a rather successful Haraseeket which included two top 10 overall finishes from Paige Smith in 7th and James Allison in 8th.

The afternoon 420s worked on getting used to high wind and keeping the boat upright and moving in harsh conditions.

The Afternoon Turnabout program worked on practice races to sharpen their mastery of racing rules and worked on high wind management while also having fun competitions with the afternoon 420s program such as a game of alphabet soup.

Since most of the 420s were gone from Tuesday-Thursday, the weekly Tuesday Night races were held on Friday afternoon. Seven boats were on the line for three races and resulted in Joseph Duffy and Robert Strange in 3rd place, Hadden Brinegar and Graydon Smith in 2nd place, and Daivd Turley and Liam Donahue in 1st place where David Turley achieved his goal of proving “Hes still got it” as he raced along the course.

In the upcoming week, the Junior Yacht Club is hosting Baked Goods Bingo on Thursday July 23 at 7 p.m. It is $3 a board and anyone can play. Yet another week has gone by for the Junior Yacht Club sailing program and it was nothing short of fantastic, here is celebration to a great week and many more.
