Southport Junior Yacht Club
Everyone at SJYC had a great week full of beautiful Maine Days! While some 420 sailors were at Portland Yacht Club for the Maine State 420s regatta, the rest of the club enjoyed good weather while traversing the Sheepscot River.
There was only one new morning class sailor this week who had to pass their swim test in Cozy Harbor on Monday. Mara Satow swam in the cold water and celebrated and warmed up with hot cocoa in the senior building. This week, the morning class sailors had lots of fun sailing to Five Islands and up and around the Pratt's Island shore. They also saw many porpoises during all of their travels! On Friday, they participated in a scavenger hunt on Spectacle Island to finish a beautiful week of fun.
In the afternoon class, eight 420 sailors packed up and travelled down to the Portland Yacht Club for the Maine States 420 regatta. While both Tuesday and Wednesday began with light wind, they were able to get seven exciting races in for a successful regatta for the Southport sailors! Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder came in 7th place, Ily Harrington and Morgan Donahue came in 19th place, Nate Phippen and Liam Donahue came in 23rd place, and Lucy Browne and Gigi Moen came in 38th place out of 45 boats.
Additionally, in preparation for Maine State Optis next week, our afternoon Opti sailors had a race day this week. They were able to get 4 races in that day, resulting in Genevieve Bunge getting 1st place with 7 points, Terrey Stone getting 2nd with 8 points, and Sebastian Moen in 3rd with 12 points.
On Friday, all of our 420 sailors were able to sail together for the second race day in their August series. On this beautiful day, they got four fun races in with Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder in 1st place with 5 points, Nate Phippen and Liam Donahue in 2nd with 8 points, and Mabel Kaler and Audrey Eastwood in 3rd with 15 points.
On Thursday, we also had the second ice cream social of the summer, which was a great success despite the rainy weather! Many people attended and enjoyed the delicious ice cream with their friends.
Next week, SJYC will be hosting the Maine State Opti regatta on Tuesday and Wednesday, so please come out and watch our sailors race and have fun! We will also be hosting the second bingo event of the summer on Thursday at 7 p.m., which will feature gifts from local Boothbay establishments. We hope everyone can make it to this last SJYC event of the summer and win many great prizes!
