Southport Junior Yacht Club
This week at the Southport Yacht Club was beautiful and full of fun events!
Nine new sailors passed the swim test on Monday’s sunny morning to kick off the week. Lucy McDonough, Samuel Legree, Charlie Legree, Rylie Leighton, Parker Leighton, James French, Evelynn Sligar, Owen Sligar, and Everly Boyd were all welcomed into SJYC and swam through Cozy Harbor to begin the week’s fun! The morning class sailors had lots of fun this week through all of the different wind speeds, and even traveled to Five Islands.
On Friday, the morning class participated in the Independence Day Challenge, which involved rowing, sailing, knot-tying, swimming, and more entertaining competitions! The yellow team won, but all teams had lots of fun!
In the afternoon class, all sailors in 420s, Optis, and recreational Turnabouts enjoyed the sunny Sheepscott River while doing racing drills and practice races. Unfortunately, because of inclement weather on Thursday, 420 sailors were not able to have a race day this week. However, they spent lots of time practicing and preparing for the upcoming Battle of the Bays Regatta at Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and hope to get lots of fun races in there.
Opti sailors were able to get a race day in this week, though, and completed five races. Chapman Brinegar came in first place for the day with 8 points, Paige Smith came in second with 16 points, and Genevieve Bunge came in third place with 19 points.
The afternoon sailors also competed in the Independence Day Challenge on Friday, and the blue team won despite the fierce competition from the other teams!
The SJYC also had an incredibly successful Ice Cream Social on Thursday, July 10, welcoming people of all ages to enjoy sweet treats and each other's company. Next week will be the Baked Goods Bingo, so please make sure to donate prizes and attend to win some homemade baked goods!
