'The Sound of Music' returns to the big screen
Audiences of all ages are invited to Lincoln Theater to experience the timeless magic of “The Sound of Music” at a special free screening Sunday, May 3 at 1 p.m. Generously sponsored by Bath Savings Bank, this event offers a rare opportunity to enjoy one of cinema’s most cherished musicals on the big screen. Come laugh together, cry together, and just enjoy a day out at the movies with family, friends, and neighbors!
Originally released in 1965, "The Sound of Music" remains a cornerstone of family entertainment, celebrated for its sweeping score, heartfelt storytelling, and unforgettable performances. The film stars Julie Andrews as Maria, a spirited young postulant at an Austrian abbey whose warmth and independent nature lead her to a new role as governess to the seven children of a widowed naval captain, played by Christopher Plummer. Through music, kindness, and resilience, Maria transforms the household, bringing renewed joy and connection to a family navigating change in the shadow of a rapidly shifting Europe.
Based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, one of the most renowned concert groups of the era just before World War II, “The Sound of Music” blends history, romance, and memorable tunes into an uplifting narrative that has endured for generations. From its iconic songs to its breathtaking Alpine backdrop, “The Sound of Music” continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
“My sister and I watched it every time it played on television when we were children,” shared Lincoln Theater Executive Director Christina Belknap. “It brings back such wonderful childhood memories. And I’ve never seen it on the big screen. I’m excited!”
