Edgecomb selectmen honored the life of a community member Sept. 1 to begin their board meeting. Aug. 8, Dave Boucher, 70, died due to a medical condition while driving a car in Boothbay.

Selectman Forrest Carver read a statement commemorating Boucher's service. "The Town of Edgecomb has recently lost a beloved community member, Dave Boucher. Dave served on the Planning Board and the Edgecomb Historical Society, and he volunteered in countless, invaluable ways for our community. He leaves a vacancy that will never be filled," he said.

In other action, selectmen made progress finalizing the special town meeting referendum warrant scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3. Residents will elect a selectman to fill George Smith's vacated seat. As of Sept. 1, only Jesse Wright has returned nomination papers.

Residents will also decide whether to amend the Edgecomb Fire and Rescue bylaws approved in June 2022. Residents will also consider whether to allow a state agency liquor store in town. All-In-One Market on Route One recently sought a liquor license to sell beer and wine.

Selectmen discovered they didn't have the authority to grant such a license because voters nearly 60 years ago rejected allowing state agency liquor stores in town. A  new generation will have an opportunity to decide whether to reverse that decision.

Residents will also vote on whether to establish a capital reserve fund. Selectmen met at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2 to finalize the Nov. 3 special town meeting warrant.

Website Committee member Maggie Hunter gave selectmen a preview of the new municipal website. The new site is expected to "go live" on Saturday, Sept. 20, which is the date of the Community Forum.

The forum will be held from at Edgecomb Eddy School from 2 to 4 p.m. Selectmen want a discussion regarding the town's future centering around growth and change, community involvement, and keeping Edgecomb affordable.

Selectmen also approved holding a referendum-style town meeting in 2027 with a different date. Selectmen set Tuesday, June 8 as the referendum date to coincide with the statewide primary elections. 

The next regularly scheduled selectmen's meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. in the conference room.
