Seahawks’ final at-bat comeback defeats Buckfield
Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning at home against Buckfield in the Class D South quarterfinal, the Boothbay Region Seahawks got a three-run, game-tying double from Liam Jacobs and, with two outs, Jacobs scored the winning run from second on a weak grounder to shortstop as Casey Phelps beat the throw to first, with the Seahawks winning 6-5.
The rally started with Les White getting a single, Matthew Reed got hit by a pitch and Cale Rogers reached on an error by Buckfield’s shortstop. After a flyout to left by Aidric Canada, Shawn Gamage singled making the score 5-2 with the bases still loaded. Jacobs, who had three hits in the game, drove the ball between center and right field and three Seahawks crossed the plate. Sam Markowitz’s fly ball to left field was Boothbay’s second out. Phelps, who started the game on the mound for the Seahawks and spotted Buckfield three runs before being relieved by Canada and Jacobs, chopped the ball toward shortstop and made it down the line in time, spawning a wild celebration in front of the Seahawk dugout.
UPDATE: The Seahawks are now scheduled to face Richmond, seeded first, at Richmond on Saturday, June 14 at 2 p.m. in a semifinal game.
